International schools, explained country by country

From international school to university abroad

International school students often apply to universities in two or three countries at once. Each system has its own calendar, its own forms and its own idea of what a strong applicant looks like.

The counsellor

Most international schools have university counsellors. Meet them early, by Grade 10 or Year 11. Ask how many students they support, where recent leavers went and how they handle applications to countries outside the school's main system.

Predicted grades

UK universities make offers based on predicted grades from the school, before final exams. IB and A level students apply with predictions, and the offer is conditional on achieving the grades.

The main systems

Curriculum matters

Check the entry requirements for your exact curriculum. An American diploma alone may not meet entry requirements in some European countries without AP scores. The IB Diploma is widely accepted but higher-level subjects can matter for specific courses.

Comparing options

Comparing universities across countries is easier side by side. The UniversitiesDB comparison tool lines up universities by tuition and programmes. Its country guides, such as universities in the United Kingdom, list institutions by city.

Costs and visas

Total costs depend on degree length as well as fees: three years for most UK bachelor's degrees, four in the US and Canada. Every country has its own student visa and proof-of-funds rules. Start these early, since visa appointments can be slow at peak times.
